Frequently Asked Questions
The Defence Research and Development Organisation is the research and development wing of the Indian Ministry of Defence. Through a network of laboratories it develops systems for the armed forces in fields such as missiles, aeronautics, electronics, armaments, naval systems and life sciences.
DRDO is primarily a research and development body rather than a production house. Systems it develops are generally manufactured by public sector undertakings and private industry partners, which is why several products on this site name DRDO as developer and a separate company as producer.
Several platforms tracked here originate in DRDO laboratories, among them the Akash surface to air missile system and the TAPAS unmanned aerial vehicle. Each product page names the associated production company, so the development and manufacturing split is visible at a glance.
The profile is compiled from publicly available material and then reviewed by our editorial team. If you spot something out of date or inaccurate, use the correction or contact link on the page and tell us what is wrong, ideally with a public source we can check.
